CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: The government of Zimbabwe was neglecting its responsibility to repair damaged roads that were riddled with large potholes.
Dilemma Action: A youth organization titled Vision Africa took matters into its own hands to call attention to the neglect of the government. This organization wanted to highlight the deteriorating state of the roads, especially inside smaller towns. To do so, activists planted banana trees in the middle of the road. Images of banana trees growing from these pothole-covered roads began to spread across social media, specifically on Twitter. This act was quite popular among Zimbabwean citizens and gained support quickly.
Outcomes: The attention this act gained in the country and online motivated officials to act quickly to repair the damaged roads. The Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Internal Security Intelligence brought Vision Africa leaders in for questioning, but they were not charged for this event. However, after this event, the leaders of this organization were required to submit reports on their activities.
