CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: More than 500 Swedish Nazis marched through the city of Falun to mark International Labour Day on Monday, May 1, 2017. The march was organized by the extreme-right Nordic Resistance Movement, an openly racist and anti-semitic organization, that has been under investigation for displaying a symbol of a crossed-out Star of David on its website. About 150 uniformed activists carrying riot shields bearing the group’s logo led the march, followed by about 350 supporters. The organization had been permitted to march along a 2km stretch ending at Falun’s main square, where they held speeches. Dilemma Action: On the same day, as a counter-protest, a local activist group called We Are Dalarna and other clown activists leveraged humor to distract from the hate being spread by the neo-Nazis and attempt to disrupt the march without violence. According to one of the counter-protesters, angry people know how to meet anger, they know how to meet hate and violence but they don’t know how to meet humor. Outcome: Local police said while the Nazis and counterdemonstrators had screamed violent insults at one another, there had been little in the way of violence at the demonstration. The police had also explained that as long as the neo-Nazi group is not explicitly inciting violent attacks against politicians and journalists, they are not committing a crime and they can not ban demonstrations just because they are Nazis.
