WIDELY HELD BELIEF

That waste incineration plants are harmful to the environment.

CASE NARRATIVE

Issue and Opponent: Das Vidanya of Greenpeace, nicknamed “Bin Boy” dressed up in a recycling bin costume on January 30, 2009, and protested the proposed construction of a waste incineration plant in Zelenograd, Russia.
Dilemma Action: Russian police can be seen comically arresting Vidanya dressed in his costume after he spiritedly taunted the officers for supporting the regime in promoting the construction of the plant. Vidanya would perform a similar act in February 2009 where instead of being put in a police car, he was taken onto a nearby bus.
Outcomes: No major success was achieved as the plant remains under construction despite protests. However, public awareness of environmental concerns has increased. Greenpeace is a campaign dedicated to climate action.
