CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: The actions take place in the convulsive scenario of the first presidential elections in Kazakhstan held in 2005. Zamanbek Nurkadilov, a political heavyweight and former mayor of Almaty, openly opposed to President Nazarbayev and was killed on November 11, 2005, he was shot twice in the chest and once in the head (the government of Kazakhstan ruled his death as suicide). In a few days preceding his murder a popular journalist Askhat Sharipzhanov (who wrote for Zonakz, a website for political blogging in Kazakhstan) took a big interview with Nurkadilov and was killed in a road accident too. Altynbek Sarsenbayev, a political opposition leader who hoped to influence the regime from within and to launch a new wave of political opposition, was also shot, this death was linked to Rakhat Aliev, President Nazarbayev son-in-law Dilemma Action: The activist group Society of Young Professionals of Kazakhstan (OMPK) organized theatrical actions and flash mobs that acted out the official government narrative of how these political killings took place. Since the official line had it that Nurkadilov, who had three shots in his body, had committed suicide, the actor who portrayed his death showed Nurkadilov shooting himself in the head and then in the heart before lying down and covering himself with a bedsheet. Outcome: The protesters were then arrested by police, but were released with the support of an international organization. All these killings were well covered by the media. After the accusations, President’s son-in-law, Rakhat Aliev, who was also pointed as the responsible of killing two of his business partners, broke his relationship with Nazarbayev and went into exile.
