CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: The garbage-filled streets of Beirut were becoming unbearable for the city’s residents during the summer heat of 2015 and began to pose serious health problems. Over 100,000 protestors took to the streets to protest the removal of garbage from the streets and to find an appropriate environmental solution to the crisis.
Dilemma Action: Though accompanied by general protests and marches, the name “#YouStink” and its social media presence symbolize the literal stink of the garbage in the streets as well as how the ruling elite stink of corruption and justice. The movement was thrust to a new level when the Lebanese government began to arrest and use violence against people for simply wanting clean air.
Outcomes: At the moment, the movement has limited its activity to Facebook. The momentum of the movement was dusted over by the Beirut municipal elections.
