CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: Dhondup Wangchen is a Tibetan filmmaker and activist who was detained by Chinese authorities in March 2008 on charges related to a 25-minute documentary titled “Leaving Fear Behind”. The film documented the opinions of ordinary Tibetan people about China’s communist government, and the exiled Dalai Lama, in the year leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Shortly after the film was distributed outside of China, Dhondup Wangchen and his assistant, Jigme Gyatso, a senior Tibetan monk, were arrested by Chinese authorities. He was sentenced to six years in prison on December 28, 2009. Dilemma Action: In October 2013, Wangchen’s wife, Lhamo Tso, delivered birthday cards for her husband to China Consulate in San Francisco, California. That action received local and international media attention and worldwide activities followed in support. After five years of imprisonment and an expected release date of 25 March 2014, the judge for the case postponed Wangchen’s release until June 2014. Angered and fearful that Wangchen’s release would continue to be stalled, Tso, friends and family of Wangchen, and the organization Filming for Tibet started the “Unchain the Truth” campaign. At the Zurich film festival on 29 October, an animation debuted that featured hands, bound by chains, breaking free and symbolically forming into a bird. The Unchain the Truth organizing group stated to the film festival attendees that their wish was for Wangchen to be safely reunited with his family. The campaign spread internationally and many pro-Tibet groups began organizing events in collaboration. Outcome: In June 2014, after a successful campaign, Wangchen was released from prison, but with a critical health condition due to the mistreatment he suffered in prison. He has been awarded by various international organizations such as Committee to Protect Journalists for his courageous work making the documentary “Leaving Fear Behind” and his case was the focal point of many campaigns of international human rights groups.
