CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: Over the years, Canada has grown reliant on its oil exports to sustain its economy. As a result, there is a deep connection with the oil and petroleum industry, which may provide these interest groups with larger political negotiation power and negatively impact the environment.
Dilemma Action: Greenpeace protestors unfurled a banner reading: “Separate Oil and State” on top of the Calgary tower after breaking into the 160-meter-tall structure in the middle of the day. Though the entry to the outer ring of the tower where the group displayed its banner was illegal, the sheer absurdity of how Greenpeace chose to present its message mocked the Canadian government and its relationship with its oil and petroleum industry.
Outcome: Concessions and media sympathy were not secured, however, as the authorities chose to handle the issue diplomatically. After 30 minutes of dialogue and 2 hours of closing off traffic in the area, the banner was taken down, and the activists were arrested. Further adding to the negative outcome, public opinion of the activists and their tactics was not supportive. Greenpeace’s actions are part of its larger purpose and mission to raise awareness or directly influence how individuals and organizations should pursue policies related to improving the environment.
