CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: In 2008, the Maldives were preparing for the first democratic election in 30 years against repressive dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Dilemma Action: The opposition party in the Maldives was searching for ways that would rally voters for their cause against Gayoom. Imran Zahir took a trip through the country in search of something that would unite the people and win votes for the opposition party. During his travels, he discovered that a large need was a public welfare system to promote pensions and healthcare. During these chats with local people about this system, a free serving of rice pudding was given, allowing the opposition party to make Gayoom appear badly in the public light. Similarly, activists hosted rice pudding parties to talk politics with these opposition leaders. When police were introduced to protests occurring before the election took place, protestors were seen eating rice pudding.
Outcomes: The opposition won the 2008 election and Gayoom was ousted.
