CASE NARRATIVE

Issue and Opponent: Hope to Nope: Graphics 2008-2018 had been a very popular and well-reviewed show portraying political art from well-known activist artists. The show included artwork from Shepard Fairey, Guerrilla Girls, Jeremy Deller, and Emel Rodriguez. However, when some of the artists found out that the Design Museum was going to host an event for Leonardo who is a company that specializes in aerospace, defense, and security, they decided to withdraw all their artwork from the museum as they were not in favor of a private event. Dilemma Action: In late July of 2018 many designers from the Hope To Nope: Graphics and Politics 2008-2018 asked the London Design Museum to pull their artwork from the museum exhibit because they found out that the museum was hosting a private event with Leonardo. Leonardo is an Italian company that mainly specializes in aerospace, defense, and security. But when the museum did not give response to the designers third of the artists removed their artwork from the show. At the time of the artwork being removed, the artists put together a collective statement that argued that having their work on the walls of the museum while the Leonardo event took place was “unacceptable” as it made their art “complicit to the arms trade.” This statement made the opponent come off as ridiculous for supporting Leonardo the Italian company. To further their protests the artists decided to hold their exhibition of their removed work by making it free to the public this time. Outcome: As a collaborative decision from all artists they decided to host a free show for the public at the Brixton Recreation Centre to show a range variety of artwork they have done. At this free show, many news sites showed up and interviewed the artists and came off as sympathetic toward them. By removing their art the artists did not show any fear instead, they felt determined by doing the right thing. Following the protest the Design Museum released a statement confirming that it would not host any other private events from defense, fossil fuels, or tobacco companies in the future while it reviews the policies that the museum has. None of the artists faced any punishment for removing their paintings and hosting a free event.
