WIDELY HELD BELIEF

The government should be held accountable for its corruption.

CASE NARRATIVE

Issue and Opponent: Prime Minister Thaksin came under scrutiny when allegations emerged that the Thaksin family sold their majority share in a large corporation for a 1.88 billion dollar tax-free transaction. The people believed Thaksin to be a corrupt leader and a “sell-out” to foreigners.
Dilemma Action: On March 29, 2006, the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) organized a mass rally in the popular shopping district and tourist center of Siam Square. The protestors occupied the space for 2 days to put pressure on the commercial interests of the Thaksin regime. The PAD targeted the shopping industry and the economic standing of Thailand to place a burden on the regime. Their protests hindered the ability of businesses to attract shoppers.
Outcomes: Thaksin’s supporters denounced this action, leading Sondhi Limthongkul (leader of the protest movement) to ask the PAD to modify their goals and demand royal intervention from King Bhumibol to remove Thaksin from office. On the night of April 3, King Bhumibol held a private meeting with Thaksin asking him to resign after his electoral victory (56% of the popular vote). Thaksin announced his resignation the next day, claiming it was out of respect for the king’s impending 60th anniversary.
